Keep in mind the monthly CAAMI meeting is this Tuesday (1/12/16) at the SJC. 7pm. Details of this community supported and coordinated mass public action will be discussed there at length.

It’s time.

Day after day—week after week—we hear and see accounts of deadly police violence unlawfully waged against members of our communities.

Sandra Bland. Tamir Rice. Freddie Gray. Bettie Jones. Eric Garner. And countless others.

Last April, right here in Albany, the name Dontay Ivy was tragically added to that list. Like most incidents of abuse at the hands of the police, those responsible for Dontay’s death have not been held accountable. The mayor, District Attorney, and police chief have refused to acknowledge the culpability of the officers who killed Dontay, and the long-standing patterns of racial profiling in our city.

January 25th, 2016, at the annual State of the City address (5:15pm), the community will converge on City Hall to have our voices heard.

Join us as we demand justice for the death of Dontay Ivy and accountability for the repeated abuses imposed on our communities by local law enforcement and the racist criminal justice system.

Shortly after midnight on April 2, 2015, three Albany police officers (Michael Mahany, Joshua Sears and Charles Skinkle) unconstitutionally stopped a member of our community for having a “suspicious” walk and one of his hands in his sleeve. He was questioned, detained, and ultimately tased to death. That community member’s name was Dontay Ivy—a father, and former Albany High athlete and honor student, who graduated from Virginia State University. Dontay had a history of heart problems and was living with schizophrenia.

On Oct. 28th, 2015, after a sloppy 7 month investigation dragged out by an incompetent District Attorney’s office, a grand jury chose not to levy any charges against the officers that killed Dontay. This has left members of Dontay’s family and the community devastated. When Dontay was originally taken from us, over 300 people came out to protest his murder.
Join us as we demand justice for Dontay Ivy, and accountability of those responsible for his death.
